Welsh first minister Mark Drakeford has ruled out allowing an independent inquiry into social services in Wales even after the death of 5-year-old Logan Mwangi, the only UK nation not to do so.
Logan Mwangi was murdered by his mother, stepfather and a 14-year-old boy despite the fact that the family had been brought to the attention of social services and them making contact with the family.
Speaking on LBC radio, Mark Drakeford said “There will be a serious case review into the events surrounding the tragic death of that child. We will wait for that to be completed to see whether there any more general points in it that we will need to draw out on a wider basis”
In response, Social work expert Prof Donald Forrester, of Cardiff University, said that Wales had seen “quite a number” of child deaths requiring reviews with the involvement of social services and that Wales was “out of line” by not carrying out an independent inquiry.
Mark Drakeford is no stranger to rebuffing independent inquiries though, he has resisted all attempts for his responses to COVID to be scrutinised and recently told bereaved families Wales had “moved on” from wanting one.
