A Plaid Cymru councillor from Gwynedd has tabled a local council motion calling for the end of the title “Price of Wales”. A title held by Prince William.

Elfed Wyn told the BBC that he wants “relevant authorities to consult formally with the people of Wales on the question of whether the title should be abolished or not”.

“I firmly believe that now is the right time to discuss this issue,”

Mr Wyn, who boasts on Facebook that historical figure Owain Glandwr is his only true prince of Wales, doesn’t have any power on the matter, nor does Gwynedd Council. It would also be beyond the powers of the devolved administration of Wales to get rid of the iconic title.

King Charles III, who has been widely welcomed in Wales, passed on the title to his son who has long been part of the Welsh community having served and saved lives along the Welsh coast when he served as an RAF helicopter pilot at RAF Valley in North Wales.

Although the Prince of Wales is a title that holds no official power over the people of Wales nationalist Elfed Wyn described the title as an “archaic oppressive tradition” adding “It gives the impression that the people of Wales are owned by the system, rather than being free citizens living in our own country.”
